Can Paper Cups Hold Hot Liquids?

Disposable cups come in a variety of sizes, materials, styles, and colors. But how do you know which ones are best for your morning cup of coffee and which will keep your iced tea cold? Each type of paper cup is designed for a specific purpose, so here is a short guide to the types of disposable paper cups out there:

Air Pocket Insulated – Great for hot beverages, these cups have an inner and outer sheet with a layer of air in between to help boost insulation. These insulated cups eliminate the need for a sleeve or doubling up on cups to keep your hands from burning.

Poly-Coated Paper Cups – Ideal for hot or cold drinks, these types of cups are coated with a type of polymer that that keeps material from sweating and offers insulation. The poly-coated cups will not cause a wax build-up in cup dispensers like wax-coated cups often do. They are available in a variety of sizes and colors.

Post-Consumer Paper Cups – Can be used for hot and cold drinks. Paper cups are made from virgin paper so in order to manufacture them trees need to be cut down. However, post-consumer cups are made from post-consumer paper materials, meaning they are made from recycled paper cups which have been made from virgin paper. They are eco-friendly and FDA approved safe for use.

Sustainable Paper Cups – Made from renewable resources, these cups are 100% compostable so they are very eco-friendly. They can be poly-coated or paper lined and are heat resistant and leak proof.

Wax-Coated Paper Cups – Only good for cold beverages. They are similar to poly-coated cups in that they prevent leaking, enhance rigidity, and boost insulation, but due to their wax coating they should not be used for hot drinks. Hot liquids will melt the wax and cause the cup to deteriorate.

Can Paper Cups be Recycled?

Unfortunately, disposable paper drink cups are not able to be recycled. These cups are coated with a thin plastic lining to keep the paper from getting wet causing the cup to fall apart. This plastic cannot be easily separated during the recycling process. The good news is that some cups can be composted, but it is pretty limited. If you have cups that are lined with polylactic acid instead of polyethylene, they can be commercially composted in less than 60 days.

While you will probably have to throw your cup in the trash, the paper sleeves that often are used with coffee cups can be recycled with corrugated cardboard. The plastic lid can also be recycled if your local program accepts #1-7 plastics that are not bottles. Straws and stirrers should be thrown in the trash with the cups.
