Can I Reuse Plastic Utensils?Disposable plastics like cups, utensils and certain containers are designed for single-use, but the question is, is it okay to wash and reuse them?
According to UW-Madison food science professor Barbara Ingham, these plastic items are not made from materials that are designed for reuse or cleaning with hot soap and water. “Upon exposure to detergents and hot water, the plastic material can begin to degrade, allowing chemicals to leach into foods and beverages,” Ingham explains.
Adding to the problem with washing and reusing plastic utensils is that they may have edges and ridges that could curl up during washing, creating the perfect hiding spot for bacteria.
Since reusing plastic utensils is not the best idea, you can recycle them, right? Well, recycling them is also difficult. Most plastic utensils are made from polystyrene, signified by a number 6 encircled by a recycling sign on the plastic or packaging. Polystyrene is not biodegradable so it can last a very, very long time, as long as centuries before it breaks down. If it were to end up in a landfill, it can last even longer because landfills are not designed to break down waste; they are designed to store it.
Polystyrene is a thermoplastic, meaning it can be melted and remolded repeatedly, so depending on where you live, recycling could be an option. Many counties and cities accept polystyrene for recycling, but just as many counties and cities do not accept it because the cost to recycle efficiently is too high. Check with your local municipality to find out whether they accept plastic cutlery.
Since it has been established that it is not safe to reuse plastic cutlery and it is difficult to recycling, your best option is to use it as infrequently as possible. It only takes a few minutes to hand wash the real stuff and even less time to throw it in the dishwasher, so save the plastic cutlery for occasions when using the real stuff just isn’t feasible.
