How Do I Clean Carpet Stains?

You do everything you can to keep your carpets clean, from removing your shoes before walking on it to not allowing your kids to bring food into the room, but spills are usually inevitable. Whether it’s coffee, wine or Gatorade, how you deal with the stain after it happens will determine if you are able to remove it permanently.

The folks at Good Housekeeping offer an “expert-approved method” for cleaning carpets with dried-on stains such as red wine, gravy, mud, pet messes and more.

  1. Get two empty spray bottles, filling one with cold water and in the other, mix ¼ teaspoon mild dishwashing liquid, like Dawn, with 1 cup warm water.
  2. Spray the Dawn solution onto an absorbent cloth (don’t spray it directly on the carpet – you don’t want it to get too wet) and dab it on to the spot. Do not rub it! As the stain begins to dissolve, blot with a clean section of cloth. Continue to apply and blot until the stain is gone.
  3. Spray another cloth with cold water, and use it to rinse the detergent solution from the carpet, and then blot with a dry cloth.
  4. Pile a stock of paper towels on the spot and place something heavy, like a pot, on top and leave overnight. The towels should soak up any residual stain that is deep in the carpet. The next morning, fluff the fibers of the carpet with your fingers and let it air-dry.
If you are in need of a more targeted approach to a stain, check out Good Housekeeping’s website for specifics on dealing with certain types of stains.

How Do I Keep My Carpets Looking Like New?

No matter how many times you vacuum or deep clean your carpets, they can get dirty fast. To keeps your carpets looking fresh and clean for as long as possible between deep cleanings, the experts at Good Housekeeping have a few tips for you to follow.

Keep Dirt Outside

Keep a doormat outside the door so visitors can wipe their feet before going inside. Try to keep dirt at a minimum by implementing a “No Shoes in The House” rule. Keeping a bin of flip-flops and slippers near the door may encourage your family to switch out their shoes.

Refresh High Traffic Areas

Invest in some heavy duty cleanings a few times a year by either renting a machine or paying a professional to do it. In between those cleanings, treat high traffic areas with a powdered or foam carpet cleaner. This will take care of those gray, matted trails that appear in front of your sofa or from the sofa to the kitchen.

De-Grit Doormats
Interior doormats catch dirt and debris from people’s shoes to prevent it from being tracked into the house. They only work if they are clean, though. The more dirt that builds up, the less dirt it will stop from coming into your house. Check the care instructions and if you can, toss it into the washing machine and dryer using the gentle cycle on warm and tumble dry low. If the mat is unable to be washed, just use a vacuum. Vacuum the front of the mat, then flip it over and vacuum the back even if it is plastic or rubber backing. This will help loosen any stubborn, embedded dirt. Then flip it back over and vacuum the front again.
