Which is the best paper towel?

Bounty Dura Towels are rated as the top performing paper towel in Consumer Reports rigorous tests. The independent rating company tested 15 different paper towels for absorbency, wet strength and scrubbing strength. Bounty was rated “excellent” in every one of tests with a score of 96 out of a possible 100. It blew the competition away! Runners up were Bounty Extra Soft in 2nd place rated excellent in absorbency, and very good for both scrubbing and wet strength and Viva Choose-A-Size scored in 3rd place for very good scores in all three testing results. Good Housekeeping also reports that Bounty scored superior to all other 19 brands of paper towels tested for strength, absorbency, thickness, lint residue, and dye transfer from printed towels.

Why is Bounty the best paper towel?

“The Quicker Picker-Upper” is not just slogan but a promise. Bounty has held the number one spot in paper towel absorbency because of the towel’s tightly-stitched quilted patterns that they are known for. These patterns actually add more paper surface area to the towel allowing it to absorb more liquid. Whether you choose their 2-ply or single ply, Bounty stitch-quilts all of their paper towels to ensure a top-quality product no matter the price point or ply.

What makes a strong and absorbent paper towel?

It all comes down to science, according to the Indiana Public Media organization. The key to the absorbency of paper towels are small molecules. These molecules that make up cellulose are actually sugar molecules that combine together, so that when a paper towel gets wet, the water molecules hurry in and hang onto the cellulose fibers.

Why are paper towels more absorbent than napkins or tissues?

Paper towels are more absorbent than any other paper product because of the manufacturing process. Unlike tissues, toilet paper and napkins, kitchen paper towels are woven together through creping and embossing allowing liquid to travel between the paper fibers in the towel. The creping process creates open areas in the paper for water to enter by using a blade and disrupting the fiber-to-fiber bonds in the paper. This procedure forms a folded structure within the paper towel sheet. The surface of the paper towel is changed from a flat surface to a shaped surface in the embossing process creating raised areas that form empty space between the paper layers. You may see it as a design, but this design is actually the empty space in the paper towel that lets the towel sop up and hold large quantities of liquid.

Why were paper towels made?

Disposable paper towels were invented to prevent the harmful spread of the common cold from restroom cloth towels. Paper towels were invented by Arthur Scott of Scott Paper Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1907, according to Wikipedia. He initially named them the “Sani-Towel” for their exceptional hygienic quality. Over time, it was proved that single-use paper towels did actually help aid against the transmission of germs in restrooms. Years later in about 1931, kitchen paper towels were introduced by Scott Paper to be used in place of the cloth towel for kitchen cleaning. Nowadays, paper towels are a common household item that we could not easily live without. Many of us found even more uses for paper towels, including using them for cleaning.

Are paper towels or hand dryers more sanitary?

Although air hand dryers were intended to cut down on paper waste in restrooms, some studies have shown that the risks might outweigh the benefits when it comes to hygiene, or does it? The New York Times reported that “The hot air will kill the bacteria on the hands but some studies have found they will also deposit bacteria in the restroom on your hands – i.e., from the air,” said Charles P. Gerba, a microbiologist at the University of Arizona. The New York Times also went on to say that, “A study published in 2016 in The Journal of Applied Microbiology found that jet dryers contaminated the surrounding area with 1,300 times as many viral particles as a paper towels would.”  Additionally, “A similar study in 2014, using a bacterium instead of a virus, found that jet air dryers spread 4.5 times as much bacteria as warm air dryers, and 27 times as much as paper towels – but the study was funded by a trade association for paper manufacturers. Another study published in 2010 found that jet air dryers resulted in fewer bacteria on the hands than warm air dryers – but was funded by Dyson,” said New York Times. The most interesting find: “One of the few independently funded studies on the subject, published by the Mayo Clinic in 2000, found no statistically significant hygienic difference between dryers and paper towels,” reported New York Times. Bottom line? Personal preference is the way to go.
