What is a toilet paper dispenser?

A toilet paper dispenser safely holds a roll of toilet paper so that it is within arms’ reach when needed for use. There are different types of toilet paper dispensers such as a household hinged length wall-mounted dispenser, a free standing floor toilet paper holder with a base, and a commercial thick axle wall-mounted dispenser on a frame that can oftentimes hold multiple rolls at once. The model that you choose completely depends upon the location in which it will be used. For example, a heavier traffic public restroom may require a durable multi-roll commercial dispenser to cut down on labor costs.

Wikipedia explains in greater detail the difference in common toilet paper dispensers:

A classic horizontal-axle, wall-mounted toilet paper roll holder is the most common toilet paper roll dispenser. Common models include a hinged length of wire mounted horizontally on a wall, a thicker axle either recessed into a wall or mounted on a frame, or a freestanding vertical pole on a base.

The wire on hinge comes in various designs. The toilet paper roll maintains contact with the wall as the roll is being used. This provides enough friction to allow the user to tear off a piece of bath tissue. Some fancier deigns include a curved horizontal plate that covers the roll so that there is no need to physically touch the roll at all during dispensing.

Horizontal axle in wall is a recessed design that used to be popular decades ago. Today, the horizontal axle design mounted on a frame is the most popular dispenser found in home bathrooms as well in commercial restrooms. It is easy to dispense and easy to replace new rolls. This is the type of holder most commonly assumed about when the “over or under” toilet paper orientation is mentioned.
Vertical pole toilet paper roll holders are not quite a popular since they can get in the way of traffic a little more easily than the horizontal axle wall dispenser.  Depending on its height, a free-standing vertical pole can hold a stock of replacement toilet paper rolls.

How do you open a commercial toilet paper dispenser?

When you have a commercial toilet paper dispenser, you have to be steadfast about consistently replenishing the paper supply when needed. Most commercial enclosed toilet paper dispensers are kept locked to prevent unhygienic tampering and theft of the toilet paper roll. First things first, retrieve the key in order to unlock the dispenser. Remove the empty toilet paper roll core before placing a new roll of paper in the dispenser. Close the dispenser back up. Be sure to return the key to the place in which it was retrieved for safe keeping and easy future retrieval.

How do you open a commercial toilet paper dispenser without a key?

Sometimes it happens. A key gets lost or misplaced. Yet the toilet paper dispenser is out of toilet paper. Now what? Jason Poel Smith of Instructables.com describes how to open a commercial toilet paper dispenser (and a commercial paper towel dispenser) without a key while using only a paper clip: “it is useful to be able to refill them is you lose the key. There are a wide variety of latching mechanisms used on toilet paper/paper towel dispensers. But usually there are one or two spring loaded plates that latch around the front cover. You will have to examine the latch on your dispenser to determine exactly how it opens. Most often you can open a dispenser by inserting the straightened tip of a paper clip into the key slot and pressing down on the plate below. When there are two plates, you need to straighten out the whole paper clip and bend it into a U shape. Then use one end to depress each of the plates at the same time.”

Which side should the toilet paper holder be mounted?

It is recommended that a toilet paper dispenser be mounted on the left side. More people than not are right handed and so when reaching for the bath tissue, it can be too awkward to extend a reach on the same side. A full reach to the opposite side will be much more comfortable. Of course, personal preference and your bathroom layout trumps any general recommendation.

Why are commercial toilet paper dispensers mounted at a low height in public restroom stalls?

Those with disabilities need to be able to access the toilet bowl as well as the toilet paper. Because of this, governmental guidelines were set. “Among other things, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ensures access to the built environment for people with disabilities. The ADA Standards establish design requirements for the construction and alteration of facilities subject to the law. These enforceable standards apply to places of public accommodation, commercial facilities, and state and local government facilities. The Access Board is responsible for developing and updating design guidelines known as the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG). These guidelines are used by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) in setting enforceable standards that the public must follow,” states the United States Access Board. Because of these laws to keep most American public restrooms accessible to the handicapped, the ADA determined the best standard height for those using wheelchairs in restrooms. Sitting at about 2 to 2-1/2 feet from the ground, then a height of 1 to 1-1/2 feet is where a person’s hand would extend to in order to grab the toilet paper. The guidelines also state that the toilet paper dispensers are allowed to be installed higher than 15-19 inches but not higher than 42 inches since that would be considered an inaccessible height. The toilet paper dispensers should be installed between 7 to 9 inches away from the front part of the toilet in the restroom stall for easier accessibility. These ADA guidelines ensure accessibility for all using restrooms.
