Did you know that straws have been around since 3000 B.C.? People used them to sip beer from jars, but in those days, straws were first made of gold, followed by rye grass and then paper. Paper was used to make straws until the 1960’s, but was replaced by plastic because it was a more durable material that was better for new designs like bendy straws. The straws we use today are made of polypropylene, which is a highly recyclable material used to make yogurt containers, toothbrushes and bottle caps. Recyclers, however, do not accept all types of polypropylene, and straws are not widely accepted. Even the largest polypropylene recycling program in America will not accept plastic straws.
The website Earth911 is currently unaware of curbside recycling programs that will accept plastic straws. If you decide to include them in your curbside recycling, it creates contamination that costs money to remove. If you aren’t sure, you can always check with your municipality, but until you receive confirmation it is best to leave them out of your recycling trash.
