Does Using a Car Specific Glass Cleaner Make a Difference?
The short answer to this question is “Yes.” Household glass cleaners and auto glass cleaners are formulated differently so they are not interchangeable.
Many household cleaners get their cleaning power from ammonia. If your car has tinted windows the ammonia will break down the tint, even fading it in some cases. If you are going to spend extra money on tinted windows for your car, you want them to stay tinted.
Because your car windows are exposed to more of the elements and usually have more grease and dust than household glass, a household cleaner won’t clean as effectively, leaving visible streaks. These streaks can impede your driving ability, especially if they are right in your line of sight. Using household glass cleaners with ammonia can also cause fogging, another safety issue you don’t want to deal with when you are driving.
Car specific glass cleaners are formulated for effective cleaning of automotive glass, utilizing the power of specialized surfactants like alcohol and vinegar while avoiding the use of ammonia. Automotive glass cleaners contain the necessary ingredients to break down grime without streaking and provide your car with proper protection.
As with anything, don’t assume that your car specific glass cleaner does not contain ammonia; always check the label before purchasing.
What Are Some Other Uses for Glass Cleaners?
Glass cleaners are obviously great for cleaning windows and mirrors, but did you know they can do more?
Non-glass surfaces such as granite, marble, laminate and tile can be safely cleaned with most glass cleaners. Glass cleaners are formulated to cut oily smudges on mirrors and windows, but that same formulation can cut through greasy build-up on your blenders, coffee makers and other kitchen appliances. Glass cleaner can even be used to break up stains on carpets and fabric.
Glass cleaner is also great for cleaning jewelry, so it’s no longer necessary to buy expensive jewelry cleaners when you can use a product you already have in your home. It is especially effective at restoring the shine on your sterling silver and diamonds.
Not only can glass cleaner be used on the above mentioned items, but it can also be used to tackle some insect problems. If you leave a small bowl of glass cleaner on your counter it can be used to keep insects away from a particular area. A small amount rubbed on a bee sting can also provide some relief.
All of these options for glass cleaner can save you from buying 4 separate products; instead just use the glass cleaner you already have!
Can I Use Glass Cleaner On Laptop and Electronics?
Glass cleaner was considered a relatively safe product to use on television screens a couple of decades ago, but times have changed as have electronics. As televisions became more advanced and laptops came into existence, the use of glass cleaners became not as safe for these items. The use of ammonia in glass cleaners is often blamed for this, but there are a number of compounds in glass cleaning products that can damage the screens and other displays of electronic equipment. Often, electronics are treated with an anti-glare film that can yellow and crack after repeated use of glass cleaners, but because it can take multiple applications for damage to occur, users don’t know until it’s too late. Damage may present as a yellowish tint or fogging effect. Screens and monitors can become brittle and start to crack while anti-glare and anti-static coatings will start to break down.
Here are some tips to help you take proper care of your electronics:
- Most importantly, check the instructions for recommended cleaning methods for your electronics devices, electronics that have screens or displays. Chances are, most of your electronics are not compatible with glass cleaner.
- Make sure that your device is powered off and disconnected from the power source before cleaning.
- If there are no instructions available to you, a slightly-damp, soft, lint-free, cotton cloth moistened with distilled water or a 50% solution of water and white vinegar. The soft, cotton cloth is important as paper products like paper towels and napkins can scratch coated glass and certain plastics and leave behind small particulates.
- If a cotton cloth isn’t giving you enough cleaning power, a microfiber cloth is a better option as it has dense hairs that can grab and hold dirt and grease better than a cotton cloth.
- The use of a soft cloth on your laptop is important as is cleaning gently. Too much pressure can create non-functioning pixels. Once you’ve cleaned your laptop, avoid touching it with your fingers.
- Whatever your approved cleaning solution is, it should never be applied directly to the screen or keyboard. Apply the solution to your soft cloth – just enough to dampen it and wipe.
Whatever your safe method of cleaning is, keep moisture away from speakers, vents and keyboards and wipe everything dry afterward.
